Most universities and colleges have some form of student ID card. These cards are sometimes used as transit passes, for checking out library books, or for accessing on-campus facilities. However, these institutional cards aren’t the only ones available.
The International Student Identity Card (or ISIC) is the only internationally recognized student ID card. As well as providing proof of full-time student status, an ISIC card gives students access to thousands of discounts and benefits all around the world.

What is an ISIC Card?
An ISIC card offers proof of full-time student status and can connect you with many student discounts, both at home and abroad.
The ISIC Association, a non-profit organization legally registered in Denmark, issues the cards. The card was first created in 1953, in the hopes of improving intercultural understanding and increasing education opportunities.
Today, the card is recognized by academic institutions, student organizations, and governments in over 100 countries. Plus, ISIC offers a mobile app that allows students to access their digital student card and its benefits on the go.
Who Can Get an ISIC Card?
To qualify, you need to be a full-time student over the age of 12 currently attending a school, college, or university. There is no upper age limit on the card, but you do need to prove you are a full-time student when you apply. If you are on break from study, you will need to check with your local ISIC issuer to make sure you still qualify.

What Kind of Discounts Can I Get With an ISIC Card?
The International Student Identity Card is designed to fit a student’s lifestyle. Students can use it to save money on their daily life, as well as entertainment, food, and travel.
Here are a few examples of the types of global discounts and benefits ISIC card holders can access:
- Museums and cultural sites
- Hostels and budget hotels
- Airlines, buses, coaches, trains, and ferries
- Cultural attractions and sports activities
- Restaurants, bars, and entertainment
- Language proficiency tests and learning applications
You can find a full list of discounts on the ISIC official site. Their search tool will show which discounts are available in your area.

How Do I Apply for an ISIC Card?
To get an ISIC card, simply go to the ISIC website and select the country where you’re a student. You may be eligible to apply online, or you may need to visit a local ISIC office where the cards are issued.
Online: If you’re applying online, you’ll need to upload the required documents and fill out the application form. Here’s what you’ll be asked to provide:
- A digital photo of yourself. A passport photo is best, but a selfie with a white or blue background is also acceptable. You can even take a photo with your phone or computer camera during the application process.
- A scanned copy of your proof of full-time student status, with the date of issue clearly visible. Student status documents include things such as your university card or an official letter of acceptance. The proof must be less than two months old.
- A scanned copy of your proof of identity (like your passport or driver’s license). If you’re under 16 years old, you’ll need a scan of your legal representative’s identity card as well.
- Your method of payment (PayPal or credit card payment).
If you apply online, remember it can take 3 to 4 weeks to process your application and deliver your card. Unless you choose to receive a physical card, your card will be delivered virtually.
Visit a local ISIC office: You may also be directed to purchase a card at an ISIC issuing office. These are located worldwide but make sure to check if there is one close to where you live. You must provide all the same documents as listed above.

How Much Does an ISIC Card Cost?
Prices and selection varies by country, but is between €4 and €25. The card’s cost is determined by each country’s purchasing power, per the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This allows ISIC to set fair prices for each country.

What Else Do I Need to Know About ISIC Cards?
If you are leaving to travel or study abroad soon, it is important you ensure there is enough time to deliver your card before you leave. Online orders of physical cards can take 3 to 4 weeks, depending on your country’s postal service. Alternatively, you can order your card in the country you will be travelling to, or just select the virtual-only option. If you do plan to get a card after you’ve travelled to your destination country, remember to bring all necessary documents with you!
