How to Find Scholarships for International Students

Did you know that over $100 million in scholarships go unawarded every year? Each of those scholarships could help a student realize their educational dreams. But finding the right information about these scholarships, including who is eligible and when to apply, can be difficult.

It can feel annoying to look for scholarships that fit your grades, extracurriculars, and goals, but it can make a big difference. Plus, the competition might not be as fierce as you think, especially for lesser-known awards.

Finding Scholarship Opportunities with ApplyBoard

You can access valuable, up-to-date scholarship information directly on the ApplyBoard platform. Scholarship information is shared at both the institution and program level, helping you to find the best options.

To find scholarships on the ApplyBoard platform, select “Scholarships Available” from the Program tag filter, as shown below:

After selecting this tag, you’ll only see programs and institutions which may have scholarships available. Want to find out if you qualify? Click on the program name or the school name and then select the Scholarships tab. Each relevant scholarship will have its own details, including:

  • Potential scholarship amount (or amount range)
  • Eligible nationalities
  • Eligible program levels
  • Whether a separate application is required (or whether you’re automatically considered if you meet eligibility requirements when applying to that program or institution)

For even more information on each scholarship, you can click on the scholarship name to be taken to its dedicated ApplyBoard page. Other Sources of Scholarship Information

Our team regularly updates the scholarship listings on the ApplyBoard platform. However, there are many scholarship opportunities available, so be sure to check other reputable sources, such as those outlined below.

Government Scholarships

If you’re starting your scholarship search, it’s important to know that some governments provide scholarships to international students:

There are a range of other scholarships available for international students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, but some may be restricted by academic level, field of study, or a student’s home country.

Cultural Groups and Service Clubs

When looking for scholarships, also consider your background and hobbies. Check out cultural groups (clubs of people who share a cultural or national background) and service clubs (community volunteer organizations; popular ones include the Kiwanis, Rotary, and Lions Clubs). These clubs often have scholarships which are likely to be less competitive. You’ll be an especially strong candidate if you’ve volunteered or supported your community in other ways.

Different Scholarship Scopes

Check for scholarships both in your home country and your destination countries. Countries everywhere want to support future leaders. Don’t forget to look at the regional and national level—local searches can turn up scholarships that students in the next state, province, or even city aren’t eligible for, and which you might have a better shot at.

Also, ask if your parents or family members’ employers have a scholarship program.

Along the way, you’ll find some scholarships that are only for domestic students, or which are exclusive to students in other fields or from other countries. But, don’t be discouraged: You’ll find other scholarships that fit you well.

Connecting Advisors with Institution-Specific Scholarships

ApplyBoard has helped over one million international students with their study abroad journey so far. Could you be next?

We’re proud to be part of the study abroad journey, but it’s only possible to have this kind of impact thanks to a global network of study abroad counselors. These consultants and study abroad advisors are independently operating businesspeople located around the world. They understand the study abroad process as well as local education systems, and they work directly with students like you.

ApplyBoard gives our counselors access to an all-in-one platform where they can learn about programs and institutions, help you apply, and check your application’s progress. ApplyBoard also shares access to an internal database with our counselors, the same one that fuels our new Scholarships filter. By working with a study abroad professional, you can save time on scholarship research!

Exclusive Scholarships

One of the ways we build towards international students’ success is by working with colleges and universities who offer exclusive scholarships to students who apply via the ApplyBoard platform.

Exclusive scholarships are available to international students at partner colleges and universities in many of our destination countries. Often, scholarships are given as money towards tuition or living expenses, but they can also take the form of free student accommodation.

Counselors learn about exclusive scholarships through email, on our internal database, and at learning sessions and webinars. Considering a program in one of these countries? If you’re working with a study abroad professional in our network, ask them about the exclusive opportunities available.

ApplyBoard’s International Alumni of Impact (IAOI) program has awarded over C$20K to incredible international students who embody resilience, innovation, leadership, and generosity. Learn more about our past IAOI recipients.
